The Whitehall Communications Centre

Cornet Switching Systems were approached by the UK Government to resolve network problems at the Whitehall Communications Centre.

The network consisted of a number of disparate systems and a complicated arrangement of generic ‘special purpose’ nodes, located by necessity in various areas within the building.  The problems in the network were unmanageable, and they were being resolved reactively by personnel who operated from within a control area left over from telex operations.

The Cornet MTX matrix switch was the clear choice to resolve these network problems, as the MTX switch could help network operators in three distinct areas:

• Proactive alarm alerting on individual circuit problems
• Ability to restore user service immediately by patching in spare resources
• Centralised test & diagnostic tool to facilitate a repair action

All from within a central location.

The Cornet MTX switch became instrumental in providing centralised interface alarm monitoring and alerting, fully electronic reconfiguration patching and sparing and remotely managed test, monitor and diagnostics facilities.

Product Portfolio

  • Matrix Switch

In the MTX-256, Cornet Switching Systems combines unparalleled interface and speed support with a space efficiency no other matrix switch system can rival. With its compact switching engine, the MTX-256 requires only one standard equipment rack to support 2048 ports. A fully expanded system occupies half the engine space of a traditional matrix switch.

  • AB Switches/Protection Switches

A/B Switching is normally combined with the traditional manual patching system, providing a facility to enable sparing of DTE or DCE equipment through the use of a toggle switch and electromechanical latching copper relays.

  • Critical Router Backup

When continuous network equipment uptime is an absolute necessity, Router Protection Switch (RPS-24) provides that security. The RPS-24 is an intelligent protection switch targeted at providing router backup in dark or dim sites where continuous up-time is critical and rack space is at a premium. The 24-port design closely matches the number of inputs on a standard router.
