The problem: A communications centre needs a matrix switch that can handle an unusually diverse mixture of legacy interfaces. This switch must switch data under control from an RS-232 interface and provide standard interface alarming; asynchronous data measurement and alarming on the level of signal distortion; voice frequencies (VF) measurement and alarming on signal level; and standard alarming on EIA-530, X.21 and G703/E1 interfaces. To ensure protection against lightening strikes the switch engine must be protected from electrical surges on incoming circuits. The solution: The Cornet Switching Systems MTX-L switch handles a wide range of interface switching requirements, and built in hardware and software manages all measurement and alarming requirements. Port cards with audio and distortion measuring features handle audio applications and asynchronous distortion measurement. The MTX-L audio port cards measure the level of the incoming VF signal and display the level on LEDs and on Cornet Switching System’s control software CorScan. CorScan produces an alarm if the level of the signal drops below an operator defined level. The distortion-measuring card provides alarms on asynchronous connections and a continuously measures the signal distortion. By using an optional fiber-muxing feature, all of the systems port concentrators units are completely isolated from the engine, thereby protecting the system from the power spikes of lightening strikes.
