Manual Patching and Switching Overview
Patching Features
Patching is a traditional manual patching system which provides
front panel access to data communications channels by simply inserting
patch cords or operating A/B switches and following established
procedures. Patching is available to meet the requirements of most
small to medium sized network control functions and is available
in modular form based generally around a 16-channel 19" racking
practice.
A/B Switching Features
A/B Switching is normally combined with the traditional manual
patching system and provides a facility for enabling sparing of
DTE or DCE equipment through the use of a toggle switch and electromechanical
latching copper relays. A/B switching systems can also optionally
provide an interface alarm functionality. The A/B switching function
can be completely manual on a channel by channel basis or the switches
can be controlled remotely. Remote control can be simply gang switching
of up to 16 channels at a time or complete system switching can
be controlled via an ASCII terminal or a proprietary management
system.
